October 23: Bayeux proved the perfect antidote to the madness of our Paris arrival: picturesque, friendly and charming, with everything within walking distance. Some of its sand-colored buildings dated back to the Middle Ages, the main drag was barely wide enough to fit two lanes and its Gothic cathedral rivaled that of Notre Dame in terms of age and interior size. The town even boasted a stream over which arched bridges crossed and masses of greenery cascaded. The place is famous for the Bayeux Tapestry and made an excellent base for exploring the D-Day beaches.
